In one week Mitchell Smith and I will be leading Workshop 1 at Water New Zealand's Modelling Symposium 2024 in Christchurch. Our workshop will focus on ways to improve beneficial returns on the (often considerable) investment made in environmental water modelling. We'll have some fun by running through a mock modelling peer review process (where Mitch and I are the poor old modellers who are out of time and budget!), as a way to explore the use of modern model outputs and methods for the benefit of all. We'd love to see you there!

Wadjemup / Rottnest Island is one of my favourite places. Here is an example of how TUFLOW FV and its Particle Tracking Module can be used to gain a deeper understanding of how the ocean currents around the island might evolve. The animation is during a period of calm winds following a prior period of extended and intense south westerly winds. These prior winds have generated persistent south to north currents, and their interactions with Wadjemup during the subsequent calm conditions are revealed by dropping numerical particles into the flow in the island lee currents (northern side). Watch for the particle circulations - which are then broken down when the south westerly wind returns and resets the system. Fluid mechanics in action, in a beautiful part of our world. #tuflowfv #tuflow

Here are the last eleven years of daily power yields from our home 4kW solar panel array. Very rough numbers: we avoided burning 220 tonnes of coal, and saved the CO2 emissions of more than 65 years worth of driving a car. And for the pointy heads like me - yes, the performance is dropping off in time....but our new 8.4kW system is going in tomorrow! Peter Coombes Paul Guard
